Ian Martin

Hello. I'm Ian and I am head of coaching and development here at Vale of York. I have overall responsibility for coach and athlete development and the junior and senior training programmes.


I am an England Athletics Coach and a qualified Exercise Referral Specialist (diabetes), Advanced Sports and Exercise Nutritional Adviser, Personal Trainer, Fitness Instructor (gym and outdoors), Strength and Conditioning Coach, Spin Instructor and Sports Massage Therapist.


I started running competitively at the age of 11, and sport and fitness has remained a large part of my life ever since. I've coached in a wide variety of community and corporate settings since 1992, and I am currently managing director at Delphis, a corporate health and wellbeing company based in York.


My face-to-face and online coaching is grounded in tried and tested scientific principles and over forty years' practical experience.


A native Mancunian, I moved to Selby ten years ago and I still count my blessings every day for the warmer and drier climate this side of the Pennines.

Paul Callaghan

Hi. I’m Paul. I'm an England Athletics qualified Run Leader and a Coach in Running Fitness. I’m also a founding member of Selby parkrun and Brayton Academy junior parkrun (launching 2021). 


I'm also a qualified Master Practitioner in Neuro Linguistic Programming, a Life Coach through INLPTA, and a Hypnotherapist with the British Institute of Hypnotherapy. One of my favourite experiences was completing a fire walk. Don't worry, I haven’t any plans to include one of these in my training sessions just yet.


My personal running passion is for long-distance endurance events. I’ve completed many of these including the London, Rome, Copenhagen and Madrid marathons, Hell on the Humber (40 miles) and Endure 24 (75 miles).


My coaching style is friendly and supportive, and I believe running is for everyone, regardless of ability. My sessions will improve your fitness, strength and running technique. Most of all, they will be fun.

Laura Collins
Hi. I'm Laura. I am a qualified England Athletics Run Leader and a Coach in Running Fitness (in training). The COVID pandemic has delayed my qualification, unfortunately. 

I was a Selby parkrun Run Director and I am now a Selby junior parkrun Run Director.

I've also taken several community-based voluntary roles including chairing the Selby National Childbirth Trust (NCT), founding Selby NCT sling library and volunteering at Selby Breastfeeding Cafe as a breastfeeding peer supporter.

I started running in 2009 purely for fitness but over the years it has become so much more. I love the running community and the friendships and connections it has brought. I'm also lucky to have ran in some stunning locations, from the Cornish coastal path to Mallorcian beaches at sunrise. It has also given me a greater appreciation and understanding of the area that we live it.

When I'm not running, I enjoy travel (although I normally combine this with running) and I have a passion for live music.

Carol Saunders Swim Coach
SWIM coach, triathlon coach AND RUN LEADER
Carol Saunders

Hello. I'm Carol. I am a qualified Swim England coach and have coached swimmers up to and including national finalists. I have also coached disability swimmers to multi national champion status. 


I am director of the Carol Saunders Swim School, which I run with my daughter, and the swim school has been established for 40 years. I'm also founder of Kippax Swimming Club, Selby Tiger Sharks and Tadcaster Swim Squad. I tutor for the Swimming Teachers Association and Swim England. A competitive swimmer, I have been in the water all my life. Swimming is my passion. 


I recently gained my Level 2 Triathlon Coach certification. I am also an England Athletics Leader in Running Fitness and British Cycling Leader as well as a Breeze Champion. I'm also a qualified gym instructor, aqua fit teacher and exercise to music teacher. I have just signed up for my Coach in Running Fitness course. 

 

I ran in the first York marathon and have completed a few half marathons including Selby and Bridlington and also completed the coast to coast cycle route from Morecambe to Bridlington. This was great fun which culminated in fish and chips with champagne!

Lee Lockwood
Hi. I'm Lee. I am your friendly and sociable run leader. I qualified as a Leader in Running Fitness with England Athletics in 2017 but have been running the streets and trails of Selby and the surrounding areas for over 15 years.


My favourite running event is parkrun. I love a bit of tourism, and when parkrun starts up again, I am going to finish my project to complete all the parkruns in the Vale of York.


Whatever the event, or the weather, I love the opportunity to get out and about and be free whilst running. Sport and fitness is simply amazing for the way in which it brings people together.


My favourite food is a Sunday roast washed down with a pint of John Smith's. Just don't tell our resident nutritionist!

Stephanie Hiscott
Hello. I'm Steph. I'm originally from Malta, but have lived in the UK for over 40 years now. 

I started running in 2014. It took me ages to pluck up the courage to join my local running club and since then, there has been no looking back. 


I’ve competed in races ranging from 5km to a marathon, but my favourite distance is ten miles. I love running to keep mentally and physically fit and it has given me the opportunity to meet many people and make amazing friendships.

I enjoy supporting others to achieve their goals and in 2017, I qualified as a Leader in Running Fitness. I am a founding member of Selby parkrun which has been a wonderful opportunity for people of all ages and abilities in our local community to get out on a Saturday morning and be active.

I am also an avid cyclist – especially in the summer months and could easily spend all day in the saddle soaking up the sunshine and exploring the countryside. My favourite ride is cycling from Selby to Bridlington via Hornsea for lunch with a cheeky dip in the sea at Fraisthorpe; and then back home via Millington Dale.

Andrea Whitehead
Hi. I'm Andrea, a 42-year-old mum of two grown-up boys. I started running in my early thirties after putting on weight when I gave up smoking and haven't looked back. 

I've now run hundreds of races, including sprint triathlons and just about every distance up to and including the marathon. Running has brought so many amazing people who I now call friends into my life.

I completed my Leadership in Running Fitness in 2014 and have successfully helped many people complete Couch to 5k. It is so rewarding to see people complete something they didn't believe was possible. 
  
I'm always up for a new challenge and will try just about anything. 
I also love open water swimming, hiking, climbing mountains and cycling. In 2019, I climbed the highest mountain in Slovenia, Mt Triglav, at just under 3,000m.

My next conquest will be Mt. Toubkal in Morocco when the world has returned to normal.

Sociable and Structured Training

We offer sociable and structured training from our qualified coaches and run leaders on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays throughout the year. We train whatever the weather and sessions are available for all abilities.

Creative and Consistent Coaching

We are consistent. You need to know that coaching will take place, so we schedule sessions in blocks of twelve and we make sure that they happen.


You want to enjoy yourself whilst working out too, so we get creative with our coaching. It's not just the same old boring routes and runs. We make the most of our natural and built environment in the Vale for inventive hill sessions, intervals and repeats.


All coaching is COVID secure, so we can take up to twelve peoplke per session.


We run virtual coaching online as well as face-to-face. Check out some of our online coaching resources we created during lockdown #2.
